Walt Disney was a wise man. In order to get started, though, you need to develop a set of goals that will become the blueprint for your success. We all want to succeed, right?

Achieving Financial Freedom

No one wants to be stuck working at a dead-end job. As cliche as it might sound, it’s the truth. Many individuals finish high school, go to college, accrue debt in some form or another and then try to land a job based on your degree but end up settling for the next best thing unless you’ve built a great network. Some people will move up to the top of the chain in their industry but then what?

You’re stuck working for some company, helping make them wealthy. Meanwhile, you’re trying to pay off your student loans or credit cards and are finding it quite hard to buy a house. Maybe you’ve bought the house and are paying it off. More Debt.

Ways to Achieve Financial Freedom

  • Pay off all debt
  • Spend less than you earn
  • Earn more income
  • Save as much as possible

The key is to learn ways to earn more and educate yourself on proper financial habits. These will be sub-goals that will help you get closer to the main goal. The deeper you dive, it all boils down to how hard you’re willing to work and how much dedication and consistency you’re willing to put in. This leads us to our next essential goal you need.

Less Time Working – More Time With Loved Ones

“In family relationships, ‘love’ is really spelled ‘t-i-m-e,’ time. Taking time for each other is the key for harmony at home.”

Dieter F. Uchtdorf

In order to spend more time with loved ones, you need to work less. In order to work less, you need to earn more, at least in today’s economic climate. Herein lies one of the ultimate goals of these essential goals you need that everyone should be striving to achieve: Work Less, Earn More, and Spend More Time with Loved Ones.

One of the greatest pillars of existence is family. You’ll never find a stronger bond in life than the one you have with your chosen or birth family. I say chosen, but I actually mean the family you’ve attracted. Your ‘soul tribe’ if you will. I’ll get more into that in another post, but the point is, not many things in life are more important than family. You won’t find someone who loves, supports, and cares for you unconditionally, as much as your family does.

Improving Physical Health

Here’s another great example of the essential goals you need. To improve physical health, sometimes it’s in more than one area and you may have to seek out western medicine in order to do so. Maybe it’s routine blood work or maybe you’ve been having that lingering shoulder soreness that should be x-rayed. You want to extend your life to its fullest potential so you can get the most out of it. After all, life is about the journey, and you want to be able to enjoy that journey.

Actionable steps to improve your physical health

essential goals you need - exercise
  • Exercise regularly (3-5 times per week for at least 30 minutes)
  • Hydrate (8-12 glasses of water per day)
  • Get quality sleep (Turn off the lights, no phones 15 minutes before bed, aim for 6-8 hours)
  • Regular doctor visits.

Physical exercise is also critical to maintaining your health, along with a balanced diet. When you keep your body moving, it keeps the blood flowing smoothly to the brain and enables us to not only function properly but also think clearly. As Herophilos, the ancient Greek anatomist, once said, “When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot fight, wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied.”

With that being said, your body is your garden, from which all the greatness in your life blooms. Make sure to nurture that garden so your greatness truly shines through. Ensure this is a priority when it comes to the essential goals you need to be making.Remember, all beings are capable of greatness. It’s just a matter of whether we tap into it or not.

“Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body; it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.”

John F. Kennedy

Improving Mental Health

Of all the essential goals you need, this one, in my opinion, is the most important. Without your mental facilities intact, you cannot possibly achieve the level of output that is necessary in any other area.

How to improve your mental health

  • Meditate
  • Seek professional counseling
  • Journaling
  • Sleep
  • Practice gratitude
  • manage stress
  • set realistic goals

Let me tell you a brief story.

In March of 2021, I gained a bit of weight from being in lockdown due to COVID-19. It started affecting my mental health. I became depressed and irritable. I started finding less joy in the things that once made me happy. None of this was favorable, and I knew I had to start somewhere. However, I was clueless.

About a month later, I started reading into philosophy. A friend of mine had recommended the book “The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living” by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman. They said this book really improved their lives. I figured, let’s give it a shot.

Philosophy in Action

“The chief task in life is simply this: to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals not under my control and which have to do with the choices I actually control. Where then do I look for good and evil? Not to uncontrollable externals, but within myself to the choices that are my own . . .”

Epictetus, Discourses, 2.5.4–5

It was at that moment that I realized I couldn’t be bothered with things that I couldn’t control, but rather, I should focus on the things that I could control, like my thoughts and my actions. A few days later, I started going on walks every day and became easily motivated to keep exercising.

Creating and Capturing Memories

My uncle passed away recently. While we were putting together pictures to be put on display at the viewing, I noticed that I didn’t have many pictures with him. Frankly, there were only a handful of memories that I could recall with him. I didn’t like this. My cousins and I took a vow to create and capture more memories to look back on from that day forward.

Life happens all to quickly. If you don’t stop to take a moment and really appreciate the things you’ve got, they’ll pass you by just as quickly. Now, by no means am I saying that you should stay on your devices and capture every single moment of your day. What I am saying is that you should make time for creating memories and capture a few extra pictures and videos. You never know when your last day will come.

What are some photo-worthy moments that you might want to stop and capture?
